What You Need To Know About Bed Bugs

What You Need To Know About Bed Bugs
If you’ve read or watched the news at all in the past few years, chances are you’ve come across a local story or two about bed bugs. Bed bugs are almost an epidemic these days due to increased travel and a decreased use of pesticides. Hotels become infested and then guests unknowingly bring bed bugs home with them. Once these pests have made it into your home, they can be very costly and difficult to get rid of. Your best bet against bed bugs is prevention. Here’s what you need to know about these tiny insects.
How to Detect Bed Bugs
While bed bugs are small, they leave a path of destruction that is noticeable to the human eye. Bed bugs typically congregate in dark areas including under mattresses, bed sheets or the legs of beds. Dark brown or black spots (dried excrement) are signs of infestation. You should also look for eggs, which are about 1 mm in size and a pale yellow color.
How To Prevent Bed Bugs
Bed bugs can travel on people, suitcases, clothing and any other portable items. A person may not feel the bite as it is happening but will notice a red bump and experience itching. One way to prevent bed bugs is to inspect bedding before sleeping. Check seams of your mattress and look for bed bugs, dark spots, fecal matter or eggs. If you stay at a hotel, wash all items in hot water immediately after returning home. Or, leave your travel materials and suitcase outside to kill bed bugs with cold weather.
How to Control Bed Bugs
If you believe you might have bed bugs in your home, a liquid insecticide treatment will need to be applied to your mattress, bedding, furniture and carpet. For best results, contact a professional pest control exterminator.
